Lawrence Public Schools Select Blackboard Learn™ Following Evaluation of Learning Management Systems

Committee Teachers and Principals Unanimously Find Blackboard Most User-Friendly Option for Blended Learning

Sep 25, 2013

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- As Lawrence Public Schools (Kan.) seek to improve student engagement, better support individual student needs and raise the achievement of all students, the district selected Blackboard Learn to implement a blended learning initiative across its 20 schools, the company announced today. The decision followed a formal evaluation of learning management systems (LMS) for the district's 11,000 students.

In a formal review of several LMS platforms, an evaluation committee unanimously chose Blackboard Learn after teachers and principals found the system user-friendly, customizable, and with a mature set of features. The committee also determined that the integration of the platform with the district's student information system, coupled with robust analytics tools, will help them identify areas where they can use data to make proactive decisions that will enable student success.

"It was clear to us from the beginning that Blackboard knows K-12 education," said Angelique Kobler, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning for Lawrence Public Schools. "We had an immediate connection with their team as they understood our needs and desire for flexibility. This market insight was clearly used to design their product. We can easily see ourselves using it in our classrooms and by parents to access academic information."

In the blended learning classes, district students will have options to personalize their learning and work at their own pace, such as independent online activities, breaking up into small virtual groups, or working directly with the teacher. The platform's mobile accessibility and flexibility in design and delivery of assessments will help teachers increase student engagement and closely support individual student needs.

"Blackboard Learn was the only option we looked at that was drive-off-the-lot ready," said Kobler. "Some of the other options had features still in development. We needed a platform that fully supports the goals of our blended learning initiative now and in the future."
